metalwork, possibly from a bed

Monday 11th November

It was a cold and wet day on Monday but good progress was made on extending the clearance of the centre room.  This involved moving a lot of large worked and unworked stone, probably from the collapsed fireplace wall, as well as the usual slates, mortar and a surprising quantity of wall plaster, some with what appeared to have the impressions left by lath and including a section with green paint.  Star finds by Norma were three pieces of ironwork, possibly from an ornate bench or a bed frame.

We also recovered two bed legs, one with a castor, and a spoon.  There were also possible traces of a wooden floor and some charcoal.

Excavation this year will continue every Monday until 16th December 10am – 2.30pm, WEATHER PERMITTING. Please look on the EAFS Facebook page on the preceding Sunday to confirm digging will go ahead.

Excavation will restart on Monday 13th January 2020, again, weather permitting.  Please check Facebook.
